Find of the Day: Barris-built 1972 Lincoln Bugazzi has interior like a dictator's bathroom

George Barris-designed Bugazzi -- Click above for image gallery

We're beginning to think that George Barris' movie cars were more restrained than his customer cars -- and that Dolemite had the man on speed dial. Barris built the car you see above: a Bugazzi (boo-GOT-zee), which started out as a 1972 Lincoln Mark IV and was turned into "an American version of a Rolls-Royce."

That means it's been slathered in thirty coats of pearl lacquer and trimmed with 24-carat gold-leaf, hand-applied pinstripes. Up front are two lanterns where the headlights would normally go. Inside, you'll find gold, suede upholstery, Persian rugs, Italian doorhandles mounted on Italian marble slabs, a television, and a back seat wet bar. That could explain why the car cost $10,000 more than a Rolls. Or not.

There were but 12 built, and not only were they bought by celebrities and the owner of the Mustang Ranch, but Motor Trend named it Car of the Month in July, 1973. We don't know what number this car is, nor do we know how many have survived, but we do know you can take it home from Daniel Schmitt & Company for $99,000. Back in October, this car passed under the gavel at an RM Auction in October for a mere $19,800. We know that Barris had set out to make an American Rolls-Royce here, and we understand Schmitt & Co are looking to turn a profit here. But $99K? Guys -- it's not a real Rolls.

Spy Video: F30 BMW 3 Series caught winter testing

BMW F30 3 Series Mule
The next BMW 3-Series spied in camo -- Click above to watch the video

The next BMW 3 Series, codenamed F30, was filmed at a gas station enduring some cold weather testing. Even in its psychedelic-swirl coating, the mule shows that the 5 Series' growth was no aberration -- the next 3 will be large. Watch for the man to emerge from the back seat in the video. Not long ago he wouldn't have even fit in a 3'er.

That's not all der neue 3 takes from its larger sibling: the elevated hoodline and what appears to be a return to unfussy lines down the side are also noted. We've yet to see much in the way of tech details, but the car will share its chassis with the next 1 Series, and this could be the 3 to receive the full weight of BMW's ActiveHybrid and EfficientDynamics goodies. Whatever engine they've got in this prototype, though, sounds good. Follow the jump for the video. Hat tip to Alexander

Automobile announces 2010 All-Stars

Automobile's 2010 All Stars

When Automobile magazine put together a list of potential all-star cars, 39 new models made the initial cut from the Audi A3 and (Euro-edition) Honda Civic to the Ferrari 599GTB Fiorano and Tesla Roadster. From that selection, only ten cars ascended to the winner's circle.

Each of the 39 finalists makes a solid case for being included, although a few did raise an eyebrow -- we really enjoy the Malibu and love the G-Class, for instance, but didn't expect to see them here. The ten that took honors are all worthy to a wheel, but again, an eyebrow or two did take note -- neither the aforementioned Ferrari nor the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG made it, but the Camaro and BMW Z4 did.

Don't let that take anything away though; these things are subjective, and every winner deserved it. Even the Dodge Ram 1500. Click here for the full list of winners and reasons.

Ford Motor Company

A V6 Engine Like No Other

While it seems like only hybrid and full-electric powertrain systems get attention these days, Ford is making waves with a V6 gasoline engine. Sure, Ford offers hybrid vehicles and electric cars. In fact, Ford hybrid sales may outnumber Honda by the end of the year according to autospies.com.

Jaguar and Land Rover design sleighs for Santa part of Car's annual design entries

Land Rover Santa Sleigh
Concept sleighs for Santa by Jaguar and Land Rover -- Click above for high-res image gallery

For the past couple of years, Car magazine has gathered renderings from designers envisioning Kris Kringle's sleigh. Last year it was Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Ford, and Nissan. This year, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Audi, Land Rover, and Jaguar submitted their Santa-ships, and the results are predictably outrageous.

The Jag and Land Rover cruisers might make you think they got their sexy back. Jag's design features the unlikely addition of twin, rear-mounted propellers (which might make rooftop landings a little difficult -- and noisy) and a painted mascot on its forward flanks that is definitely not Mrs. Claus. The Land Rover snowspeeder-thingy has particle accelerators, and those are always sexy, and we dig Santa's pose with that cigar, looking straight out of a Hugh Hefner photo shoot. We have a feeling that Hef, however, wouldn't have a reindeer in that front seat...

Speaking of which, we'd be interested in finding out why some car designers think Santa wants to tackle his annual delivery route with one single reindeer riding shotgun. You can have a look at the JLR sleighs below, and click here to check out the rest at Car.

Pat Schiavone, Ford Flex and F150 designer, resigns

Pat Schiavone

Patrick Schiavone, Ford's design director for trucks and crossovers, is leaving The Blue Oval. In his 21 years with the company, Schiavone has penned and helped develop Fords both naughty and nice: the last two F-150s; the Flex; Expedition; Cougar; Focus; Lincoln Navigator and Blackwood; the Mighty F-350 TONKA and Ford F-150 Lightning Rod concept trucks; and the Contour show car.

His inkwell is likewise responsible for the 1994 Ford Mustang, the car that did the phoenix routine on the pony car line. It's an impressive resume, and is probably why he "received a great job opportunity outside the auto industry." His last day at the office will be sometime early next year.

Great Wall cars headed to Europe in 2010

Great Wall Phenom
Great Wall Phenom Concept -- Click above for high-res image

Not to be deterred by the woes and recent fate of Brilliance -- or perhaps, having learned from it -- vehicles from Great Wall, the Chinese automaker, will be imported to Europe next year by the UK-based I.M. Group. Brilliance, you might remember, suffered a disastrous couple of crash tests that doomed the company's chances pretty much everywhere. Even after it rebounded with a much improved design, people couldn't un-see and un-remember the catastrophe that was the BS6, and the company's German importer went under.

I.M. Group already imports Subaru, Isuzu, and Daihatsu. That not only gives it some of the best experience possible in bringing Asian cars to Europe, that means it isn't solely reliant on Great Wall to be a success. As well, I.M. is starting with Eastern Europe, planning imports to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania first, with further expansion planned for 2011.

We'll say for the record that if Great Wall builds the Phenom Concept (pictured) as is, and the car gets a good crash rating, we'd have absolutely no problem giving it a try. Even with a that grille. You can read the I.M. Group's release after the jump.

Behold, the Power of Subaru: WRX STI tows semi out of snow

Unlikely tow truck
A Subaru WRX STi pulls a semi stuck in the snow -- Click above to watch the video

Somewhere in the snow that's falling all over the northern hemisphere, a tractor-trailer got stuck on some slushy ice and snow, blocking a city street. That helpless semi was then strapped to a Subaru WRX STI, and the little engine -- and AWD -- that could, extricated the truck from its predicament.

That's cool enough on its own. Yet, what we really want to know is the backstory – did someone say "Don't worry about a wrecker. If you see a blue sedan with gold wheels and a giant wing, and it growls, that's all we need..."? Follow the jump to see it all unfold on video. Thanks for the tip, Roy!

Spyker Tries Again: Submits 11th-hour, 11-point bid for Saab

Spyker's motto, written on all of its cars in Latin, is "Nulla tenaci invia est via." Translation: "For the tenacious, no road is impassable." And so here the Dutch company is, tenaciously chasing Saab, announcing in a press release that they have submitted a renewed offer to General Motors that addresses what are said to be eleven sticking points that scuttled an earlier agreement.

To be clear, we don't know what each of those eleven issues are. According to a report in a Swedish paper (translated), GM's man-in-Europe, Nick Reilly, called off the sale Friday morning, citing intellectual property fears regarding Spyker's Russian backer, and the desire for GM's board to be decisive on the matter of what would become of Saab. Spyker's statement mentions the need to receive approval for a European Investment Bank loan by the end of the year, but says it has found a solution to that need. One wonders how it could possibly address its Russian support, from Vladimir Antonov's Conven Group, in a way that might make GM happy. Either way, we should know soon whether the new proposal works, as Spyker has set a deadline of 5pm Eastern on Monday as its drop-dead date.

On a side note, Norway's Bard Eker has begun to share his take on what prevented Koenigsegg's attempt to purchase Saab (translated). Two of his points were that GM had made Saab too difficult to extract from the parent company and that Koenigsegg couldn't get GM to set prices for Saab parts. As the deal looked increasingly likely to go through, Eker says that GM wanted more money. This, however, happened before Whitacre, Jr. took the helm and apparently before indecisiveness became so frowned up by The General's leaders.

In the meantime, the Swedish government is reportedly conferring with GM reps to see what else might be done to prevent Saab from flat-lining for good. Is this an attempt by Spyker and/or the Swedish government to save face, or does this proposal truly eviscerate previous sticking points and clear the way for a reborn Saab? We're not sure, but while you (re)buckle your seatbelts, be sure to read Spyker's complete statement after the jump. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Cargraphic brings Airlift system to Audi R8

cargraphic Airlift for R8
Cargraphic Airlift Audi R8 -- Click above for high-res image gallery

The Audi R8 is undoubtedly awesome. It is also undoubtedly low, as in to the ground. Not low enough to prevent you from getting around, but you pay close attention anytime the word "driveway" comes up. Cargraphic has engineered an airlift system to address the issue that can raise the car 72 mm (2.8 inches) in 15 seconds. The best part about it is that it doesn't alter the dynamic performance of the car's suspension.

The airlift places small bellows on the upper spring cup of the suspension. When the bellows aren't inflated, the mounting point is rigid, so the suspension responds as normal. With the compressor, the total weight is just 3 kilos, and there are no hydraulics or fluid to deal with. And the system comes with a remote control, in case you want to show off your additional three inches when you're not in the car. Full details are in the press release after the jump, and in the gallery of high-res images below.

Santa gets new super sleigh thanks to GE

Santa's super sleigh
Santa's high tech sleigh by GE -- Click above to check out the specs

General Motors gave Santa a sleigh with OnStar and a reindeer monitor. General Electric must have seen that video and said, "Hold on a second," because they created a sleigh for the big red man with icephobic coatings, self-powered OLED lighting, ceramic matrix composite blades, GE sodium batteries, Trip Optimizer, and a 500GB holographic disc that holds 200 DVDs worth of information.

Santa's suit gets in on the Iron Man act, too, with a wearable RFID sensor hidden in the fringed getup as well as a wireless medical sensor, because Mr. Kringle's Body Mass Index is out of control. And since elves are notorious worriers, they get Asset Intelligence Tracking Tech to keep Santa on the radar and out of Vegas.

But for all that, GE didn't include a blue button so the kiddies could keep track of him...
