Thus far, the company has kept a remarkably tight lid on the details of what the buyers can expect from the forthcoming supersedan, but varied and persistent rumors all point to more power, more usability, more economy, and more edge.<br />
<br />
The next M5's twin-turbo V8, said to be a tweaked version of the one in the X5M and X6M, could have somewhere between 570 and 600 horses in its corral. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/18/rumormill-aluminum-and-carbon-fiber-kers-equipped-bmw-m5-comet/">Carbon and aluminum will undoubtedly be featured prominently</a>, and a Kinetic Energy Recovery System could also figure into the mix. Maybe it's just us, but it looks like the front end is going to wear some serious wheel arches as part of the visual package, too.<br />
<br />
The only obvious, and disappointing, hole in all of the scuttlebutt so far is whether the new M5 will be offered with a manual transmission. We hope BMW knows that there is indeed a wrong answer to that question...<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> is rounding out its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show</a> premier lineup with the North American debut of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/5+series+gt">535i Gran Turismo</a>. The 550i GT that's powered by the 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 is already on sale in the U.S., but we won't get our shot at the six cylinder model until the spring of 2010. Like the recently-announced 5 Series sedan, the Gran Turismo is getting a new version of the 3.0-liter inline six cylinder turbo.<br />
<br />
The current 535i and 335i both use a version of the six with two turbochargers. The version in the GT produces the same 300 hp and 300 pound-feet of torque with a single twin-scroll turbocharger. The engine also incorporates BMW's Valvetronic valve control system to reduce fuel consumption by eliminating the throttle and reducing pumping losses. The six will be mated up with the same new ZF eight-speed automatic used in the 550i and the ActiveHybrid 7. Want more details? Click past the break for the press release.<br />

But he does it all in his 100-percent totally lovable way that frankly we find impossible to resist. Even those spouses that think your big, fat V8, "sounds wasteful" are sure to become fast fans. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a>'s storied history of building roadsters dates back to the original 328 of the 1930s. However, there have been gaps in the brand's open-top lineage, including one extended stretch through the '60s, '70s and '80s. After a dalliance with the bizarre European market Z1, BMW finally got serious about roadsters again in the '90s with the introduction of the Z3. <br />
<br />
Earlier this year, the Munich brand introduced what's essentially the third generation of its modern mainline roadster (discounting the aforementioned low-volume Z1 and the Z8) in the shape of its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/z4">all-new Z4</a>. Upon its introduction, the esteemed Mr. Harley took our first crack at the new "E89" at its Southern California launch last spring and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/13/first-drive-2009-bmw-z4-grows-up-at-cost-of-its-groove/">came away with mixed feelings</a>. <br />
<br />
To be fair, whenever an automaker builds a new model, there's always a distinction between what the engineers and designers expect of it and what consumers bank on. There's also a big difference between spending a few hours on a prescribed driving route under controlled conditions versus living with a car as a daily driver for a week or longer. So we wanted to spend time with the Z4 on more familiar turf to see what life is like with BMW's newest roadster.<br />

His cars were rarely pretty, but their influence resonated around the automotive world like a pipe bomb in an echo chamber. Much like cutting edge graphic design is born inside art school graduate schools years before it's ready for massive public consumption, Bangle's Bimmers were ahead of their time. And they changed nearly everything. Controversial? Of course, but that's how the public digests new design. Skittishly at first, before becoming so used to the flavor that it's hardly noticed anymore. <br /> <br /> Case in point: The Toyota Camry, probably the most conservative car in the world, and one that attempts to appeal to as great a cross-section of buyers as possible, uses the rear end (a.k.a. Bangle Bustle or in the parlance of our times, Bangle Butt) from the 2002 BMW E65 7 Series. Again, you don't have to like Chris Bangle's work, but to deny his influence is to be willfully ignorant. This past February, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/03/breaking-chris-bangle-quits-bmw-auto-industry/">Mr. Bangle retired</a> from both BMW and the car industry as a whole. And to our knowledge he's been laying pretty low. That is until <a href="http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/Industry-News/CAR-interviews-Chris-Bangle-what-he-did-next/">Britain's <em>Car</em></a> caught up with him at his design studio/vineyard in northern Italy. <br /> <br /> How's he doing? Well, he seems to be the big art school nerd he was before he was able to retire to the Italian country side. In other words, he talks about a car's inherent "carness," as well as stuff like, "It is about creating a different type of relationship between design, design's outcome, the product and the people who use and enjoy it." A big however, however, is in order because we get treated to a more critical, dare we say, unrestrained side of Chris Bangle.<br /> <br /> "I feel incredibly motivated to find out how design can overturn this horror of a world," Bangle tells <em>Car</em>. That's one way of taking design to the next level. Bangle also lays some wood into the current state of car design. "You can always argue that the generation before didn't have the constraints that we have, but that's crap." As you can see, it's a fun read. BMW Motorsport has announced a lust-worthy addition to its growing line of customer racing offerings in the form of the BMW Z4 GT3. <br />
<br />
Although BMW hasn't released pics yet, the factory-built Z4 will be powered by an uprated version of the M3's 4.0-liter V8 currently fitted to the race-ready <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/15/video-e92-bmw-m3-racer-rolls-out-to-the-track/">M3 GT2</a>. Controlled by a Type-408 ECU and Power400 control unit, the 4.0-liter V8 is good for a claimed 480 horsepower and sends its ample grunt through a standard six-speed sequential gearbox. Central-locking wheels, ABS and a host of other kit will allow the Z4 GT3 to campaign in a number of sanctioned events, including the FIA GT3 European Championship, International GT Open, ADAC GT Masters and several 24-hour enduros. <br />
<br />
Deliveries begin in the second quarter of 2010, with an estimated price of 298,000 euro, or over $425,000 on a straight exchange. Full details and ordering information available in the press release below the fold.<br />

Late last month, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> officially revealed its next generation <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/5+series">5 series</a> sedan in Munich and the opening salvo of powertrains includes the usual array of gas and diesel six- and eight-cylinder engines. However, with the recent launches of the ActiveHybrid X6 and 7, no one expects it to stay that way for long. BMW officials have acknowledged its intent to expand hybrid capability to other models going forward and, as the next redesign, the 5 would be the logical choice. <br />
<br />
We're not sure if the new 5 will show up at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit show</a> next month, but it should appear by the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> in March. At that time, the ActiveHybrid 5 will probably debut as a concept with the production version possibly arriving by the end of 2010. At this point, it appears unlikely that we'll see any more BMW applications of the two-mode hybrid system used in the X6 (with the possible exception of the X5). Instead, the modular mild hybrid from the 7 is the likely candidate since it delivers much of the benefit at a lower cost and smaller packaging size.<br />

The next BMW 3 Series, codenamed F30, was filmed at a gas station enduring some cold weather testing. Even in its psychedelic-swirl coating, the mule shows that the 5 Series' growth was no aberration -- the next 3 will be large. Watch for the man to emerge from the back seat <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/20/spy-video-f30-bmw-3-series-caught-winter-testing/#continued">in the video</a>. Not long ago he wouldn't have even fit in a 3'er. <br />

That's not all der neue 3 takes from its larger sibling: the elevated hoodline and what appears to be a return to unfussy lines down the side are also noted. We've yet to see much in the way of tech details, but the car will share its chassis with the next 1 Series, and this could be the 3 to receive the full weight of BMW's ActiveHybrid and EfficientDynamics goodies. For starters, lots and lots of power, along with a smattering of light weight and plenty of cutting-edge technology. This all sounds familiar, but the rumored details coming out of Bimmerfile suggest that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/m5">2011 BMW M5</a> would be nothing short of revolutionary.<br /> <br /> Not surprisingly, we're told to expect a version of the twin-turbo V8 that currently powers the M division's hi-po <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/x5+m">X5</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/x6+m">X6</a> tallboys with somewhere around 570 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. On top of those prodigious figures may very well be a Kenetic Energy Recovery hybrid setup to recapture wasted energy from braking. The stored power would be used to send an extra shot of power via an electric motor contained in the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The KERS power boost reportedly would be controlled by the driver with a Formula 1-style button on the steering wheel.<br /> <br /> Further performance would be found by putting the next-gen <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/5+series">5 Series</a> on a diet consisting of a chassis wrought completely in aluminum with carbon fiber used in various body panels and optionally on the roof. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> heralds its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/x5">X5 sport utility</a> vehicle as a "Sport Activity Vehicle." The tactic is designed to focus attention on the vehicle's on-road handling and driving dynamics, but it's also an attempt to eliminate any need for the automaker to apologize for the X5's limited cargo space and restricted off-road capabilities. Regardless, consumers don't seem to mind, as they've been snatching up the SAV since its introduction in 1999. <br />

BMW delivers the goods with three capable gasoline-fed engines, including a new 555-hp twin-turbocharged <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/x5+m">X5M</a>, that keeps the ute's fun-to-drive factor higher than nearly every SUV on the road. So with on-road performance such a high priority, why has BMW decided to fit the 335d's 3.0-liter turbodiesel into its biggest SUV? More to the point, how does the fuel-efficient oil-burner fit into the mix and does it affect drivability and performance in the process? All that and more after the jump.<br />

Six months into its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/28/first-mini-e-delivered-to-la-customer/">Mini E</a> field test program, BMW is getting ready for phase two of its electric vehicle development. At the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Auto-Show/">Detroit Auto Show</a> next month, the Bavarian automaker will introduce its Concept ActiveE which brings electric drive to the Roundel. This time, instead of the diminutive Mini, these new teaser images suggest that a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/1+series">1 Series</a> coupe is set to go the plug-in route. <br />

With the Mini E, BMW rushed to get the cars out into the field, recruiting AC Propulsion to produce the powertrains and battery packs comprised of laptop cells - a setup not unlike the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/roadster">Tesla Roadster</a>. This time around, the car is much closer to what might be expected of a mass-produced electric car. BMW plans to build another fleet of EVs based on this concept, and once again, it will again put cars into the hands of ordinary drivers and fleets for more field testing. When the latest generation of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a>'s big <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/7+series">7 Series</a> went on sale in the U.S. early this year, buyers had a choice of either the marvelous twin-turbocharged and direct-injected 400-hp 4.4-liter V8 or the supremely impressive twin-turbo, 535-hp V12. A hybrid version of the 7 also goes on sale here in a few months, still mated to the V8. Since day one, European drivers have also had a pair of six-cylinder options fueled by either gasoline or diesel. BMW still hasn't committed to a 7 Series diesel for the U.S., but today has confirmed will be getting the sweet gas-powered I-6. <br />

The 740i and 740LI both come to the U.S. market in spring 2010 powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six. In 740 trim, the six cranks out 315 hp and 330 pound-feet, up a bit from the 300/300 ratings in the smaller 335i. The 740 engine does retain the direct injection and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust. This new model also marks the U.S. debut of brake energy regeneration on a non-hybrid BMW. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercedes-benz/">Mercedes-Benz</a> Baltimore vehicle process center has secured a five-year contract to inspect, process, and repair pre-delivery <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mini/">Mini</a> vehicles arriving in the United States. It's a deal that makes economic sense for both companies, say that automakers. BMW models currently arrive in Charleston, South Carolina, and are shipped to nearby Spartanburg (home of BMWs assembly plant) for inspection and pre-delivery work. That plant is "no longer appropriate" once the X3 starts production next year, says Jim O'Donnell, president of BMW North America. O'Donnell says BMW has been looking for an outside contractor, and it was the company's own purchasing department who proposed the deal.<br />
<br />
Ernst Lieb, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, called the deal "a win-win situation." The company has both the manpower and space to service the additional BMW vehicles, and this arrangement may create additional opportunities for the two companies down the road. The Baltimore vehicle process center, on track to process 70,000 vehicles this year, currently handles Mercedes-Benz and Smart vehicles. The arrangement with BMW will not begin until March 1, 2010. <br />

This guy. So, some of you no doubt remember the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/19/cadillac-cts-v-challenge-nets-120-applicants-heinricy-to-stand/">Cadillac CTS-V Challenge</a>. If you don't, here's a refresher: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors </a>vice-chairman Maximum Bob Lutz challenged any journalist to bring a CTS-V competitor to California's Laguna Seca where the 77-year-old Lutz would mop the floor with he/she and whatever fancy-pants, Euro sedan they done brung. Of course, the event got moved to New York's Monticello Motor Club, and to guarantee that the Cadillac didn't lose, GM brought in a backup pilot, John Hienricy, the company's noted hot shoe engineer and race car driver. And then every other manufacturer (Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar) decided not to play into GM's marketing ploy, and withdrew their <strike>cars'</strike> support. <br />
<br />
To be frank, we here at Autoblog toyed with the idea of throwing our hoon-hat in the ring, but after Heinricy became Cadillac's ace in the hole, we figured the whole challenge was unwinnable (we've driven with Mr. Heinricy - he's <em>that</em> good). While it would no doubt have been fun, totally playing into General Motor's hands like that (by <em>also</em> losing), well, not so much. Luckily, privateer Michael Cooper and his BMW M3 wasn't in on our conference call. <br />
<br />
Mr. Cooper showed up to the Caddy Challenge and laid down a 2:50.424, beating not only Bob Lutz's 2:56.321 in the way more powerful CTS-V, but our pals Lawrence Ulrich (2:53:026) and Jack Baruth (2:51:153), both of whom were driving the big supercharged Caddy. Not surprisingly, Heinricy blew the doors off of every single person, ripping off a 2:46.560. Probably while flossing. But let's not overlook young Michael Cooper, who with 142 less horsepower and a boatload less torque to work with came in less than four seconds behind John (ringer <em>*cough*</em> ringer) Hienricy. <br />
<br />
BMW was so taken by Mr. Cooper's feat of good driving that they reportedly invited him down to their North American headquarters in New Jersey and gave him a BMW Performance Multifunction Steering Wheel. How else to thank the guy that tossed such an effective monkey wrench into GM's marketing plans? BMW installed the wheel in Cooper's M3 while he was given a ride in a special BMW Performance enhanced 335i Sedan. So, one more time, a hearty Autoblog congratulations to Michael Cooper and his Cadillac CTS-V challenging BMW M3. The one with the fancy new steering wheel. <br />

Normally we can think of some cute little anecdote to kick these here posts off with, but today... can't do it. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bmw/">BMW</a> is raising their prices by 0.4 percent across the board on vehicles sold in North America. This price increase takes effect on January 1, 2010. Why? BMW isn't saying. And while less than a percent may not sound like much, if you're buying a stripper 760Li ($136,600), that's like $600!<br />
<br />
There is a tiny sliver of good news. The three vehicles that just got introduced to this continent in December -- the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/11/first-drive-2010-bmw-x6-activehybrid-is-technologically-impress/">ActiveHybrid X6</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bmw+7+series+activehybrid/">ActiveHybrid 7</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/550iGranTurismo/">550i Gran Turismo</a> -- are unaffected by this price increase. Of course as all three of those vehicles haven't proved themselves in the marketplace yet, so that sliver is even tinier upon second glance. <br />
<br />
But it's not just the base prices that are going up. Destination &amp; Handling fees are on the rise as well. Every new BMW is coming with an additional $50 tacked onto the 2009 $825 price, for a total of $875. And yes, this fifty dollar increase applies to the two new hybrids and the Gran Turismo as well. Happy New Year!<br />

When <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> launched the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/z4">Z4</a> early this year, they made it clear that, unlike the last Z4 and the Z3 before it, there were no plans to create an M version this time around. Of course, forgoing the M nomenclature doesn't mean that BMW won't create a faster Z4 than what's currently in showrooms. <br />
<br />
In fact, the first of those faster roadsters will debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show. The Z4 sDrive35is is based on the existing 35i, with its delicious twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six. Compared to the existing turbo Z4, the new model gets a higher-flow intake and the turbos are allowed to spin up to higher boost pressures, resulting in an 11 percent bump in both power and torque output. The '35is now makes 335 hp and 332 pound-feet. In fact, for brief bursts, the 35is can crank up the boost even higher resulting in short periods of up to 369 pound-feet of torque. <br />
<br />
BMW claims the Z4 sDrive35is will get to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. Other features of the 35is include revised electric electric power steering programming, a standard dual-clutch gearbox, and brake energy regeneration. Visually, the 35is wears some M Sport aero and suspension bits and sees its ride height dropped 0.4 inches lower than the standard 35i. They may not be calling this a full M Roadster, but in most respects, that's exactly what this new model is. <br />

We all know what the biggest problem with the BMW X6 M is, right? Not nearly enough power. Sure, 555 hp from a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is 5 hp more potent than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, making the X6 M the most powerful production SUV on earth. Still, 600 hp is the new black, so a stock X6 M just ain't going to cut it. Thank heavens, then, for G-Power.<br />
<br />
Meet the G-Power Typhoon. Thanks to 15% increased airflow to the intercoolers, G-Power was able to wrangle an additional 45 hp out of the Bimmer's motivator. Torque's up a bit, too. From 500 lb-ft to 516. G-Power claims the 0-62 mph dash is lowered to 4.5 seconds, too. One issue with that, however: <a href="http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2009/10/il-track-tested-2010-bmw-x6-m.html"><em>Inside Line</em></a> ripped off a 4.3 second 0-60 mph blast in a stock X6 M, meaning this here Typhoon should be three flavors of bonkers. <br />

Then there's the matter of looks, always a sticking point when discussing modern Bimmers. Here's what we recommend. Go down to your friendly neighborhood BMW dealer with a folding chair. Locate an X6. Sit down in front of it and start staring. Meditate, let everything else you've ever known or thought about cars and car design melt out of your mind. This should take between five and seven hours. The salespeople won't mind -- honest. When you snap out of your trance with your doors of perception suddenly nailed open, the X6 will appear to you as it truly is -- pretty okay-looking. <br />

That settled, we'll admit to liking the G-Power's mods. For instance, you can't say the new front clip looks worse than the old one, can you? And who amongst you doesn't love 25mm profile tires riding on 23-inch wheels? There's all sorts of carbon fiber this and kevlar that available as well. The best part just might be that G-Power isn't leaving the X5 M -- the X6 M's ugly duckling sibling -- out in the cold, as there's a Typhoon kit for it, too. You know what word comes to mind? Audi has the mid-engined <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/r8">R8</a> (now available with a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/31/first-drive-2010-audi-r8-v10-answers-our-power-prayers/">525-horsepower V10</a>). Mercedes-Benz now has the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/sls+amg">AMG SLS</a> (with more power than the R8 - <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/09/2011-mercedes-benz-sls-amg-first-drive/">563 horses</a>). BMW has... a 500-horsepower V10 in a 4,000 pounds M6. Not exactly competitive in the supercar department these days. Well, according to everyone's favorite British Buff Book (<a href="http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/245983/return_of_the_bmw_m1.html"><em>EVO</em></a>), BMW will be releasing a new supercar. Probably something resembling a mashup between the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/23/pics-aplenty-bmw-m1-hommage-concept/">M1 Homage Concept</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/15/frankfurt-2009-bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-concept-is-mean-ger/">Vision EfficientDynamics Hybrid Concept</a>. However, it might not be called M1. Or, it might be.<br />
<br />
Here's the thing - BMW is also believed to be working on a buffed out, super version of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/1+series">135i</a> (based on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/18/report-bmw-m-division-pushing-for-hardcore-version-of-next-1-se/">Tii Concept</a>) that semi-logically could be called the M1. Check out the supposed stats on this little puppy: a reworked twin-turbo 3.0-liter motor good for 400 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque, a 150 pound weight reduction, seven-speed dual-clutch tranny, the M3's suspension and torque-vectoring rear end. Where do we sign up?<br />
<br />
The issue is that some people within BMW feel the semi-sacred M1 moniker should be reserved only for a car that replaces the 1978 M1, the first car BMW's Motorsports Division ever made (even if <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lamborghini/">Lamborghini</a> played a roll). They do have a point, as among us gearhead types the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/27/bmw-celebrates-30-years-of-the-m1/">M1</a> is a pretty reverential piece of machinery. However, what would you call an M-caliber 1 Series? <br />
<br />
Autoblog's advice is this: nothing's sacred. Call the hopped-up 135i the M1. No one cares except for a few old timers within BMW and a few fanatics on the outside. Besides, the aforementioned old timers have sat idly by as the fabled M Division has arguably diluted its once lofty rep by releasing the X5 M and X6 M. It's all water (and <em>money</em>) under the bridge anyhow. And by freeing themselves from this false dilemma (because really, who cares?), BMW is free to name the new supercar the M8. <br />
<br />
Failing that, just name the mighty 1 Series the Tii (confusing almost everyone) and reserve M1 for a proper supercar. We don't really mind, as long as both cars go on sale. And no matter the name, it sounds like the range-topping 1 Series should see the light of day in 2011 and the new supercar - which will pair BMW's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with two electric motors - should come online around 2012. Color us excited. <br />
